Black History Month at Showroom Cinema: ‘We are the Storytellers’

This Black History Month, Showroom Cinema presents ‘We Are the Storytellers’ a programme celebrating the creativity, talent and leadership of young, Black people across Sheffield.

Running from 3 October to 5 November, the programme has been developed with young people and grassroots organisations at its heart. It's about giving the next generation space to be heard, show their talents, and lead; while supporting the organisations already working with them in the region.

We have developed the season with inspiring local community and creative groups, who are bringing their own experiences, ideas and practices into the programme through film, music, poetry, art, discussion and more. Partners include Calabash!, Poets Yield Power (PYP), 6+1 Running Club, Site Gallery Creative Leaders and Sharrow Young Leaders.

Working with DJs, poets, artists, and community organisers, the programme does more than celebrate history, it creates pathways into the creative industries and gives a platform to grassroots organisations.

‘We Are the Storytellers’ showcases the vital work our partners do with young people across Sheffield, often with limited resources. Through live Q&A sessions, workshops and introductions, audiences can learn more about local organisations, support their fundraising and discover ways to get involved.

The season includes five events, opening with a screening of Sinners and DJ set from Calabash! on 3 October, and closing with Good Burger, presented by Sharrow Young Leaders on 5 November. Tickets to all events are just £5. ‘We are the Storytellers’ brings together creative and community organisations working across different areas of young people's lives, united by a common belief: “Young people should not simply be audiences, they should lead, create, and shape the spaces around them.”

Black History Month at Showroom is programmed as part of a year-round schedule of activities within the cinema's Community strand. The strand works with diverse communities to showcase films that reflect and celebrate their values, cultures and beliefs. Tickets to all Showroom Community screenings and events, including those as part of ‘We Are the Storytellers’, are just £5. ‘We Are the Storytellers’ is about watching our young people leave this programme knowing that their creativity matters, their stories matter, and there are spaces where their voices can be heard.

They are not just the future. They are the storytellers of Sheffield now. Join us this Black History Month and support the next generation, and organisations making a difference across Sheffield.
