Sheffield’s House of Film
Showroom Cinema is one of the United Kingdom’s leading independent cinemas. For more than thirty years we have brought people together to discover film, share ideas, and feel part of Sheffield’s cultural life. We sit within a landmark Art Deco building in the heart of the city and we welcome everyone.
We are operated by Sheffield Media and Exhibition Centre, a registered charity recognised and funded by the British Film Institute. Every ticket purchased and every coffee shared helps to support our cultural mission.
We make film and culture accessible for everyone in Sheffield and across the North of England. Our work is recognised and funded by the British Film Institute.
Film Hub North
We are the Lead Organisation for Film Hub North, the largest hub in the BFI Film Audience Network. We connect cinemas, festivals, and community groups across the North to grow audiences and strengthen independent film.
BFI Film Academy
We are one of only seven BFI Film Academies in the United Kingdom, providing young people with practical training, mentoring, and clear routes into screen careers.
What we show
Showroom Cinema is Sheffield’s home for film, curating British independent, international, documentary and archive work with regular filmmaker Q and As. Our screens and spaces host shoots, previews and premieres throughout the year, shaping the city’s cultural story.
Showroom is the home to some of Sheffield’s most important film events.
In 2024 we launched the Sheffield Film Festival, a new platform for world cinema and independent voices
Access and inclusion sit at the centre of what we do.
Welcoming screenings with adjusted sound and lighting.
Screenings for anyone who benefits from a calmer environment.
Affordable family cinema and special strands for young audiences.
Activity with schools, colleges, and community partners.
Our free membership for people aged twenty six and under, is part of this work.
Our award winning Café Bar is a social space for audiences, visiting filmmakers, festival guests, and neighbours. It is open to all and helps make Showroom welcoming and inclusive. Join us before your film, stay for a conversation after, or drop in any time. The Café Bar has been recognised at the Best Bar None Awards for its role in Sheffield’s cultural life.
Alongside the cinema sits Work Station, our sister venue and creative business centre. More than sixty cultural, creative, and digital companies call it home. We provide studios, offices, co working, meeting rooms and conferencing, event spaces, and virtual office services. Since 1993 we have supported more than two hundred and fifty companies and host more than one thousand one hundred events each year.
Our building began life in the 1930s as a state of the art car showroom. Saved from dereliction in the 1990s, it was reborn as a cultural landmark for Sheffield. Since then our screens and spaces have woven themselves into the city’s story through rehearsals, auditions, film shoots, special events, and everyday moments.
Everything you need to make the most of your visit.
