Showroom celebrates LGBTQ+ History Month with prize-winning films

To celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month, Showroom Cinema, Sheffield, presents queer cult classics and platforms prize-winning new voices.

Sheffield’s leading independent cinema is collaborating with friends and partners for a series of special screenings this LGBTQ+ History Month. From cult classics and Oscar-winning dramas, to partnerships with Sheffield DocFest and E.D.E.N. Film Productions, this year’s programme platforms exciting new queer talents and stories.

Highlights include:

  • The People's Joker (Director Vera Drew) from 21-27 February. An aspiring clown grappling with her gender identity combats a fascistic caped crusader. This DIY parody film, and hilarious reimagining of the coming-of-age story, finally arrives on UK screens after an acclaimed tour of the festival circuit and much online buzz.

  • Best of Iris Prize (various directors) on 22 February. Our Community screenings continue with a showcase of award-winning new talent from one of the UK’s most prestigious LGBTQ+ film festivals. In collaboration with EDEN Film Productions. All tickets £5.

  • DocNights: This is Ballroom (Directors Juru, Vitã) on 24 February. A euphoric explosion of Brazil’s contemporary queer culture, where the city’s top ballroom houses convene in an electrifying, all-night competition. Presented in collaboration with Sheffield DocFest.

Isobel Harrop, Assistant Programmer: Young Audiences, says: “We can’t wait to deliver another year of rich and diverse programming that explores the many corners of LGBTQ+ cinema. This time we’re working with even more local groups to showcase the stories they want to see, inspiring, celebrating, and uplifting the LGBTQ+ community within Sheffield.”
