Margot (Isabelle Adjani) is one of several in line to inherit the crown in France, where Roman Catholics and Protestants are jockeying for power. Margot's mother, Catherine de Medici (Virna Lisi), is intent on seeing her son take the throne once the reign of King Charles IX (Jean-Hugues Anglade) ends. After being married to a man she doesn't love and starting a tryst with one she does, Margot contends with her mother's at-all-costs plan to control the political fate of the volatile country.
Spotlight Pick: Chosen by Russell Jones, Customer Services Assistant. Russ had the below to say and will introduce the film:
"For my Showroom Spotlight I have chosen a film that may have slipped under the radar for most moviegoers and is deserving of being seen on a big screen. La Reine Margot is a lavish French production directed by Patrice Chéreau in 1994 and is based on the novel by Alexander Dumas which is full of political intrigue, betrayal, desire and death.
I first discovered this film late one night channel hopping and I recognised the actor Jean Hugues-Anglades from Killing Zoe from the Roger Avary directed movie about a heist gone wrong. His turn as Eric was so captivating in that film it piqued my interest and I ended up watching La Reine Margot and thoroughly enjoyed it. Lavish sets, great performances from Isabella Adjani and the aforementioned Jean Hugues-Anglade and a visual spectacle. I look forward to seeing it on the big screen with an audience."
