Founded as a key creative engine in South Yorkshire's media landscape, Sheffield Vision Ltd—celebrated for their landmark documentary work including Made in Sheffield: The Birth of Electronic Pop — has consistently chronicled the unique artistic identity of the Steel City. Their cinematic output bridges the gap between raw industrial heritage and forward-thinking electronic subcultures, cementing Sheffield's status as a crucible of British innovation.

Stroboscopic Synergy - Sheffield Premiere

In the 1930s, photographer Gjon Mili pioneered the technique of stroboscopic photography, his imagery capturing movement through multiple exposures. Photographer Tracey Welch and drummer Rich Westley set out to explore this technique through digital technology. The imagery they produced was impactful and further studio sessions with four other Manchester based musicians showed how this style of photography offers unique insights into musical performance and the relationship between musician and instrument. Funding from Arts Council England has enabled development of the Stroboscopic Synergy project.
A short documentary shares the story of how Stroboscopic Synergy unfolded. Together, Tracey Welch and film maker Eve Wood bring us an insight into the process and the people behind the project. We see the relationship between photographer and musician, and how the stroboscopic technique works in practice to capture each different instrumental contribution. Behind the scenes interviews with musicians, and with producer Dean Honer, offer a variety of personal perspectives on the project. In the final studio session, we see musicians who had never previously met, embracing this uniquely creative experience to deliver a piece of music truly representative of Stroboscopic Synergy. A film about inspiration, challenge and the joy of finding new forms of expression.
