Set on the US/Mexican border, Lone Star (John Sayles, 1996) is a film that explores the relationships between people of different ages and ethnicities by telling the story of a police investigation after the discovery of a human skeleton.
As the plot unfolds, a series of myths and lies are exposed, revealing a complex tapestry of inconvenient and disturbing truths about past crimes, lost love and hidden family histories.
Partly a ‘Western’-style murder mystery and partly a meditation on the ethics of memory, Lone Star challenges common assumptions about identity, difference, and the contested moral certainties to which they give rise.
