After Godzilla's attack on Tokyo, the King of Monsters’ cells are used in experiments with genetically modified plants in the hope of transforming barren deserts into fertile land. When the institute’s laboratory comes under attack Dr. Genshiro is badly injured and his daughter is killed. Merging some of Erika’s cells with those of a rose in an attempt to preserve her soul, Dr. Genshiro unwillingly creates a monstrous mega-flora, the terrifying plant creature, Biollante.
Godzilla vs. Biollante is the second film the Godzilla Heisei series and the first to introduce a rival titan for the King of Monsters to battle against. Taking large inspiration from The Little Shop of Horrors (particularly the infamous alternate ending) and switching focus from nuclear anxiety to new threats posed by biotechnologies, Biollante feels like a fresh introduction to a new era of kaiju films.
We’re very excited to show Godzilla vs. Biollante as part of our third-year celebration of all things Kaiju. With stunning night-time photography, wild power pop soundtrack and one of the most impressive suit-mation and puppet feats of the entire series it is an ideal celebratory feature to open this year’s Kaijuly festival.
This screening will preclude with short, animated film, 1921’s Dreams of a Rare Bit Fiend - The Pet by Windsor Mccay, considered the first on screen depiction of a city being ravaged by a giant creature.
