Just as the French film industry began to slip into the box-office doldrums in the 1980s, along came ‘Cinéma du Look’ to revive it. This ‘New New Wave’ of movies by brash young directors, aimed at international audiences, emphasised style over substance. Critics sniffed accordingly but they were warmly embraced by the young public, especially Jean-Jacques Beinex’s Diva, Luc Besson’s Subway and Léos Carax’s Mauvaix sang.
