Although Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut both paid homage to the Hollywood crime film, the French New Wave filmmaker who really dedicated himself to the genre was Claude Chabrol. The most prolific of all the ‘Nouvelle Vague’ directors and the one most immersed in popular cinema, Chabrol (co-author of a book on Hitchcock) regularly returned to the theme of murder among the well-to-do in such films as La Femme infidèle, Le Boucher, Les Noces rouge and Cop au vin.
