The popularity of Hollywood movies in postwar France, which had been starved of American imports before the Liberation, could not help but influence French filmmakers and enrich locally produced crime films. Writer-director Jean-Pierre Melville built his off-screen image around his love of American culture and created a distinctive on-screen world in films such as Le Doulos, Le Samouraï and The Red Circle.
