A small French town in the Perigord region is terrorised by a series of gruesome killings. Meanwhile, a repressed schoolteacher (Stéphane Audran) forms an unlikely friendship with the local butcher (Jean Yanne). Hailed on its release as the greatest French film since the Liberation, this Hitchcockian thriller forms part of a cycle of movies by Chabrol concerned with murder among the middle classes.
