Double Take: My Favourite Cake

12A F

My Favourite Cake is an Iranian 2024 romance feature film directed by Maryam Moghadam and Behtash Sanaeeha focusing on 70-year-old Mahin as she seeks to embrace the rest of her life, pursuing romance to end her loneliness. After living in solitary for so long, Mahin decides that she should find a partner in a society that is hostile to these connections that she longs for so strongly.

The film follows her as she finds a potential match and builds this connection in a magical evening that gives her a chance to revitalise her love life.

In viewing and celebrating this film during the Missed Connections film season, we will offer an opportunity to decorate cupcakes, inspired by the cake that Mahin creates in the film, and various activities that will encourage audiences to look back on their own lives and embrace what is to come!

Missed Connections Double Bill | Friday 14 August

Our BFI Young Programmers have paired My Favourite Cake with Past Lives as part of Double Take Festival 2026.

Curated by our BFI Young Programmers, Missed Connections explores relationships and opportunities that we have missed for various reasons, whether they are out of our control, determined by our past or objections that are embedded in society. This includes learning to accept past connections that we have missed or can't have and focus on new experiences.

"We have chosen My Favourite Cake to represent passing time and opportunities that we may have missed in our lives.

The film encourages us to celebrate every connection we find and make the most of the time we have to build them.

The film is an embodiment of taking advantage of the little moments in life that connect us to others."
