Double Take: Donkey Skin

PG

Donkey Skin is our second feature. It’s an incredibly strong entry from the French new wave director Jacques Demy, husband of the legendary Agnes Varda. Featuring his third use of the musical sub-genre, it springs to life in minutes with whimsical and sometimes nonsensical songs doubling up as life lessons for the naïve main character. However if songs aren’t your thing, there’s much more to this film in the wacky and wonderful visuals inhabiting every frame of the film, which are bound to have you scratching your head or laughing away at the sheer absurdity of it all.

This is a landmark film for anyone interested in historical French cinema and is a fun time for the whole family.

Down the Rabbit Hole Double Bill | Tuesday 18 August

Our BFI Young Programmers have paired Donkey Skin with The Fall as part of Double Take Festival 2026.

Down the Rabbit Hole is an exploration of fantastical, surrealist, and childlike tales told through film.

"Our double bill aims to bring generations of young and old together through visually striking and imaginative other worldly scenarios that everyone can identify with and enjoy. Inspired by Alice in Wonderland, our title perfectly sums up what you can expect from the titles we are showing."
