Showroom's monthly open mic invites writers of all styles are welcome to perform their work.
How does Wong Kar-wai make a familiar city feel strange? Building on the previous session, this lecture approaches Fallen Angels as a darker companion to Chungking Express. We will examine its fractured storytelling, crime-film conventions, extreme wide-angle compositions, distorted perspectives and energetic editing, asking how cinematic form expresses isolation and desire.
Particular attention will be paid to nocturnal spaces, bodily movement, popular music and the relationship between seeing and being seen. Comparing the two films, we will consider how Wong turns Hong Kong into an emotional landscape while experimenting with the boundaries between genre cinema, art cinema and urban portraiture.
Few filmmakers have captured the beauty, loneliness and emotional complexity of modern life quite like Wong Kar-wai.
