Film Studies - Lecture: A Minute of Eternity - Time, Memory and the Cinema of Nostalgia

Wednesday 24 February 2027

Next Event: Wednesday 24th February 18:15

Why do certain moments remain with us long after they have passed? This lecture explores Wong’s fascination with time, memory and the emotional power of nostalgia. Focusing on Days of Being Wild, we will examine how Wong constructs a cinematic vision of 1960s Hong Kong through music, costume, architecture and fragmented storytelling.

Particular attention will be given to recurring images of clocks, the unconventional narrative structure and relationships shaped by absence and longing. We will also consider how Wong’s representation of the past reflects broader questions about Hong Kong’s cultural identity and historical consciousness. Rather than treating nostalgia simply as a desire to return, we will explore how cinema transforms memory into an imaginative experience.
