This July, celebrate some of the greatest stories from the Ancient World on the big screen

In celebration of Christopher Nolan’s latest release, The Odyssey (out Friday 17 July), we are presenting four classic stories of the ancient world, on the big screen throughout July.

From Biblical epics to modern-day spins on The Odyssey, Jason battling Greek mythological creatures, and more, this season has been programmed with great care to celebrate the epic nature of the cinema experience.

Kicking off on Sunday 5 July is 1960s classic Jason and the Argonauts. After saving the life of his royal father's usurper, Pelias, whom he fails to recognize, Jason is encouraged by the conniving murderer to begin a quest in search of the Golden Fleece.

On Sunday 12 July, in collaboration with the London Indian Film Festival, we present a new 8K restoration of the timeless tale The Mahabharata. One of the greatest stage-to-screen adaptations ever, the film is based on the Indian epic, by the legendary British director Peter Brook.

On Sunday 19 July, the opening weekend of Nolan’s The Odyssey, we present a modern take on Homer's epic Odyssey, adapted by the Coen Bros., O Brother, Where Art Thou? In the deep south during the 1930s, three escaped convicts search for hidden treasure while a relentless lawman pursues them. George Clooney, John Turturro, and Tim Blake Nelson star in this modern classic.

Closing out the season on Sunday 26 July is one of the most epic productions in Hollywood history, celebrating its 70th Anniversary, The Ten Commandments. The Egyptian Prince, Moses, learns of his true heritage as a Hebrew and his divine mission as the deliverer of his people.

Charlton Heston stars opposite Yul Brynner, Anne Baxter, and Vincent Price in Cecil B. DeMille's epic, often regarded as one of the great films of Hollywood's golden age, and an unmissable big screen experience.

The screening will be followed by an exclusive display of The Ten Commandments memorabilia and posters by local collector Paul Spencer, as well as letters between Paul and Charlton Heston. Catch these screenings every Sunday afternoon at 14.30 throughout July. We’re also happy to share that Showroom Cinema will be the only venue in Sheffield where you can catch Christopher Nolan’s latest film, The Odyssey, on 35mm. Shot across the world, Nolan brings Homer's foundational saga — written some 3,000 years ago — to the screen for the very first time. Don’t miss the cinema event of the year!
