Freshers at the Showroom: A Term of Twisted Friendships and Cautionary Tales

They say your student years are the best of your life, though nobody quite warns you how strange those first few weeks can be. This autumn, as Sheffield fills up with wide-eyed new arrivals, Showroom Cinema is throwing open its doors with a Dark Academia Freshers programme built especially for those finding their feet. Sheffield is a city that loves film, and Showroom has been at the heart of it for over thirty years, with a unique programme of indie features, classics and special events. Best of all, our free CINE26 membership for 16- to 26-year-olds means students can access the best value tickets in town, just £6 for most screenings.

To welcome Freshers through our doors, the in-house programming team have gathered some of the finest coming-of-age tales set in schools, colleges and universities, spanning both the light and the dark sides of academia. We open on Friday 2 October with the gloriously unhinged all-girl fight club of Bottoms (15), before Greta Gerwig's tender, sharp-witted Lady Bird (15) arrives on Sunday 4 October. Thursday 8 October then brings the twisted friendships and social climbing of Saltburn (15). Together they capture the peculiar intensity of youth, ambition and the wish to belong.

All are welcome, but Freshers in particular are invited to join us for activities, meet-ups and craft sessions built around the films, the perfect chance to make new friends and, just as importantly, learn exactly how not to behave in your new era. Consider it a masterclass in cautionary tales.

There is plenty more programmed to tempt our newest arrivals, too. Brand-new coming-of-age comedy Extra Geography arrives fresh and full of heart, while a Black History Month special of Sinners promises something altogether more electric. And for those who like their reading lists a little haunted, the dark-academia-coded Sense & Sensibility rounds things off in suitably brooding style.

Once you have found your feet, keep your eyes on what comes next. October is a bumper month at Showroom, with a full Black History Month season celebrating Black storytelling across the decades, and a selection of the very best new cinema arriving as part of the London Film Festival. The ideal excuse to keep coming back long after Freshers week.

So whether you are here to make friends, avoid the mistakes of the characters on screen, or simply escape halls for a couple of hours, there is a seat waiting for you.
