Families at Showroom this Week: More Myths and Magic with Shrek and The Gruffalo

Showroom's Journey Through... Myths and Magic continues this week. Our summer programme of family films, supported by East Midlands Railway Community Fund, takes you from a fairytale classic to a crafty toddler morning. Here's what's on for children and families.

This Saturday 22 August, Family Time brings Shrek (U) to the big screen at 11am and if you haven't introduced the kids to the grumpy green ogre yet, now's your chance. When an assortment of fairytale characters are banished from their kingdom by the villainous Lord Farquaad, they descend uninvited on Shrek's beloved swamp. Determined to reclaim his solitude, Shrek strikes a deal: rescue the beautiful Princess Fiona, and Farquaad will clear them out. Accompanied by the irrepressible Donkey, he sets off to do exactly that, though Fiona's deep, dark secret may prove a bigger challenge than the rescue itself. This screening starts promptly at the advertised time with no adverts, and free face painting will be available after the film.

Our Family Time strand screens every Saturday at 11am, with films suitable for ages 5+ in a relaxed setting, with low-level lighting and Hard of Hearing subtitles where possible.

On Monday 17 August, Showroom hosts not one but two morning screenings. Toddler Kino kicks off at 11.15am with The Gruffalo (U), the charming animation based on Julia Donaldson's much-loved picture book, following a resourceful mouse on a walk through the woods. Crafts are included after the screening, a lovely way to round off the morning for little ones.

Later that day, our parent and new baby programme, Baby Kino screens Tony (15) at 12.15pm. The film follows a 19-year-old Anthony Bourdain as he stumbles into the chaotic world of a Provincetown restaurant kitchen, setting off a summer that will shape the rest of his life. Dominic Sessa, so compelling in The Holdovers, leads the cast in this warm and absorbing biopic. Baby Kino runs every Monday at 12.15pm and includes pram parking and a complimentary hot drink with every ticket.

Children attending any of our family screenings can enjoy a small drink and popcorn combo for just £4.50, while adults save 10% off their food bill in the café bar when they present their ticket.
