'While class may divide, music brings us together. In today’s divided social climate, ‘Common People’ is a strand intended to remind us of what connects. Following two opposing working-class stories from Lancashire to London, our strand features the nostalgic and youthful ‘Northern Soul’ and the first ever Black-British musical, the hopeful reggae-infused ‘Babymother’. Despite their differing aesthetics, both films prioritise working class joy and spirit through the music that we love to celebrate.' - Darci, Young Programmer
A disc jockey (Joshua Whitehouse) introduces his new friend (Elliot James Langridge) to Northern soul, a combination of American soul and distinctive dance styles that takes the United Kingdom by storm in the 1970s.
