Introduction: This special screening will be introduced by Liam Hall, Course Leader for BA Animation and BA Illustration at Sheffield Hallam University, alongside a screening of high-quality local student short films ahead of the feature. In partnership with the Sheffield Creative Industries Institute.
Driven by the joy and confusion of a little girl’s discovery of the world and her place within it, Maïlys Vallade and Liane-Cho Han’s poetic, astoundingly beautiful animation feels like it’s arrived from a different planet.
In late 1960s Japan, toddler Amélie finds the world a peaceful, perplexing mystery until a rapturous encounter with chocolate (relatable) ignites her wild sense of curiosity about, well, everything. Exploring the wonders of nature, Amélie also develops a deep bond with her family’s housekeeper, Nishio-san, and begins to understand the painful history beneath the surface of their idyllic existence as foreigners in post-war Japan.
Adapted from the autobiographical novel by Amélie Nothomb, bringing a toddler’s experience of the world brilliantly to life, Maïlys Vallate and Liane-Cho Han’s Little Amélie is a poignant and wondrous story about the healing power of connection.
Special Event: Join us for a special Little Amelie event on Sun 15 Feb for an introduction to animation by an expert.
