Showroom Community x Slam Barz: Behind the Barz

12A

The film follows 6 artists and 3 producers as they take on the challenge of creating a full record from scratch in just 2 hours. Split into three teams, these creatives combine their unique styles, ideas, and approaches under pressure to craft three original tracks, proving what collaboration, creativity, and raw talent can produce when time is limited and the stakes are high.

The screening will be rounded off with a live performance of all three tracks featured in the film by featured artists: MitchelX, Arz, Geeraii, AJ, Standizzi, and Lottie Dawe, at the Showroom Cinema Main Bar.  Funded by The University of Sheffield and Arts Council England, with support from Off the Shelf Festival of Words.

Special thanks to Pirate Studios and Small Green Shoots for supporting this with the Studios For All Fund, together with support from The National Lottery Community Fund. The goal of this initiative is to empower music charities and organisations already working in England to engage disadvantaged, marginalised, and vulnerable individuals through music. Over the next three years, the fund will allocate £180,000 worth of studio time to at least 120 groups across the country.

Jack Godfrey is a Sheffield-based director and freelance filmmaker with a passion for telling impactful stories. From the age of nine, he has used cinema to convey powerful messages across genres, from documentary to horror. As the director of the award-winning short A Reckoning, which was featured at the Madrid Arthouse Film Festival, his work has gained international recognition.

Jack has collaborated with cultural institutions like The Leadmill and the MOBOs and has worked with notable figures such as Eddie Hearn and Jonny Nelson MBE. Behind the Barz continues his commitment to amplifying voices and capturing raw, authentic narratives — this time exploring the urgency, pressure, and creativity that define Northern artistry.

Dom is a multi-disciplinary artist, creative freelancer, and researcher. As the founder of Slambarz CIC, he has dedicated his career to amplifying emerging talent and fostering community connections through music and storytelling.

A Churchill Fellow, Dom conducted international research into the impact of the music industry on communities, traveling to Jamaica, Berlin, and Athens for valuable insights.

Through collaborations with institutions such as The Leadmill, Tramlines, MOBOs, BBC 1Xtra and more, the Slambarz team have been instrumental in providing transformative platforms and opportunities for young artists to grow.

Behind the Barz reflects this mission — showcasing collaboration, pressure, and pure creativity as Northern talent rises to the challenge of making music against the clock.
