Philosophy: Memento

15

Leonard (Guy Pearce) is tracking down the man who raped and murdered his wife. The difficulty, however, of locating his wife's killer is compounded by the fact that he suffers from a rare, untreatable form of memory loss. Although he can recall details of life before his accident, Leonard cannot remember what happened fifteen minutes ago, where he's going, or why.

The film explores philosophical themes relating to memory and personal identity, and the relationships between our minds and the physical items that we use to surmount our mental limits.

Philosophy at the Showroom is a series of screenings that probe the philosophical questions raised by some of cinema’s most intriguing films. Each film will be introduced by a philosopher from the University of Sheffield and will be followed by a group discussion of the philosophical problems it confronts.
