Film Studies: Gaslight

PG

Following a whirlwind romance in Europe, Paula (Ingrid Bergman) returns with her new husband Gregory (Charles Boyer) to the London mansion where her aunt was murdered a decade before. But why do the gaslights dim when Gregory goes out at night? And why will nobody believe Paula when she tells them?

Patrick Hamilton’s seminal Victorian thriller Gas Light was made into films twice in the space of a few years. This is the superior Hollywood version, directed by George Cukor on highly evocative studio sets at MGM. Joseph Cotten and Angela Lansbury co-star.
