In 1840s New England, farmer’s daughter Miranda Wells (Gene Tierney) is invited by her wealthy distant cousin, Nicholas Van Ryn (Vincent Price), to visit his vast Hudson River estate, Dragonwyck. While she is there, Van Ryn’s wife dies suddenly, and Nicholas subsequently proposes to Miranda.
This was the first film to be both directed and written by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, one of the key postwar Hollywood filmmakers (All About Eve, Guys and Dolls, Cleopatra). It foreshadows Vincent Price’s later rise to fame as a horror star.
