BHM: Mental Health - Our Menopause (Short Film + Panel)

CTBA

Our Menopause features a group of Black British women talking frankly and movingly about their experiences of the menopause. They were from up north and down south, with roots across the world - from Guyana to Ghana. In their 30s, 40s, 50s and even an octogenarian, they share their stories openly and honestly, finding similarities and differences, learning a lot about themselves, and what they all had in common was menopause.

The screening will open with Ola Fagbohun, Director of Zest Of: You, who will introduce the key themes of the film. After the film screening, audiences are invited to join our host Jade Ayino and guest speakers Ola Fagbohun and Nwugo Ugada for a discussion. The conversation will explore the importance of awareness, support networks, and accessible resources, emphasising how shared knowledge can empower women both medically and emotionally.

This film and discussion aim to celebrate resilience, foster understanding, and spark meaningful dialogue around Black women’s menopause experiences.

Partners:

The CLARITY+ project brings together 17 community organisations serving people from minority ethnic communities in Sheffield, Rotherham, Birmingham, Dudley and Coventry to collectively reimagine ways of valuing the work that they do. Over the course of the project, we have collaborated with a range of community organisations on a diverse range of health-related events, including Black men’s mental health, the health of Muslim mothers, and the health and well-being of Roma communities.

A Touch of Black Health is the seventh showcase event we have collaborated on over the past year. The project is funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research School for Public Health Research - https://sphr.nihr.ac.uk/

Ola Fagbohun (Zest OF: You) is a key partner and community researcher on the CLARITY+ project. At Zest OF: You, we celebrate the many experiences and truths of menopause. Too often, the conversation is narrow, leaving people excluded or overlooked. That is why we focus less on symptoms and more on creating supportive, brave spaces where people can connect, learn and share their lived experiences.

We do this through collaborative, creative health approaches, coaching, and research, challenging assumptions, and demanding practical, culturally centred solutions, so menopause care reflects real lives. Because at Zest OF: You, your experiences are always acknowledged, valued, and celebrated.

Educate Yourself about Menopause: https://educateyourself.org.uk/

You and Me_Nopause's aim is to help ourselves and others to understand and treat menopausal symptoms, and the physical and emotional rollercoaster of reproductive wellness. To continue engaging with friends and colleagues across the globe as we learn about their lived experiences and find out tried and tested practical activities and interventions that help treat menopausal symptoms.

Our Menopause: Black Women Speak (London Film Academy Documentary Award 2023) supported by Efficacy EVA, and You and Me_nopause.

So, join us in reimagining menopause and ageing on our own terms, through connection, creativity, and change.
